What Is NDIS Skill Development on the Gold Coast?

NDIS skill development (also called Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living) is about building your own abilities over time. It's not just about a support worker doing tasks for you – it's about them teaching and supporting you to do things yourself. Whether it's cooking a meal, managing your money, navigating public transport, or communicating with others, skill development is goal-focused and practical.

Skill development differs from personal care or household tasks because it's specifically designed to increase your independence. A personal care worker might help you shower; a skill development worker teaches you the steps and builds your confidence so you can shower independently. The Gold Coast's diverse layout – beaches, shopping centres, light rail, community hubs – provides real-world environments where you can practice new skills in the places where you actually need to use them.

Our approach on the Gold Coast is straightforward: we set agreed goals with you, we work toward those goals with clear steps and support, and we track your progress at every session. As you build skills, you become more independent. This aligns directly with the Capacity Building goals in your NDIS plan and is designed to create lasting change – not just temporary help.

Skill development suits young adults transitioning to independence, people rebuilding skills after illness or injury, and individuals with intellectual disability or autism who want structured, consistent support to develop practical life skills. Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about NDIS skill development on the Gold Coast

What is NDIS skill development and how is it different from personal care?
NDIS skill development (funded under Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living) is about teaching and supporting you to develop your own abilities over time. Personal care involves a worker doing tasks for or with you. Skill development involves a worker teaching you how to do tasks yourself – for example, learning to cook a meal, catch the bus, or manage a budget. The goal is to reduce your reliance on support over time and increase your independence.
How is skill development funded in my NDIS plan?
Skill development is typically funded under the Capacity Building budget – specifically Improved Daily Living. This is separate from your Core Supports budget. Not all NDIS plans include Capacity Building – if yours does, your plan will specify the goals and dollar amount. Your support coordinator can help identify which goals are appropriate and how to use your Capacity Building funding effectively.
How do I know if skill development is working?
We document goals at the start, track progress at each session, and check in with you (and your support coordinator if applicable) regularly to review whether goals are being met. If a skill is being achieved, we move on to the next goal. Progress notes are maintained and are available to you and your coordinator at any time. The aim is genuine, measurable improvement – not simply ticking boxes.
Can skill development happen in the community rather than at home?
Yes, and for many skills it's most effective in the community. Practising public transport navigation means actually catching the Gold Coast light rail or bus. Practising shopping means going to a Coles or Woolworths and working through the process. We use real Gold Coast environments – local shops, community centres, transport hubs – to ensure skills are practiced in the context where they actually need to be used.
